For many years I was a devoted student of Paul Klee and Red Grooms, of Robert Rauschenburg and Milton Avery, of American Outsider Art and Mexican Folk Art. Then I had two children and discovered the source for so much inspiration; children’s art. Whether my goal is to capture the memories of childhood or the powerful simplicity and emotion that lies therein, I don’t know; but I have endeavored to make the vocabulary of children’s art a part of my own voice. The out-stretched arms of my figures, for example, is a common image children employ to depict their joy and fearlessness. I make art incorporating every day stuff that can contribute to the piece with a weight equal to the fine artist’s paint and French pressed paper I also use. I want the elements of surprise and amusement to stand firmly with the serious intent of my work as these are the necessary ingredients for survival; pasting together pieces of ourselves to create our whole world.
