Ruthann PerryI am a sculptor currently working in wood and found objects, including recovered architectural details and foundry molds. Most recently, horses have been my primary subject, although I’ve also created sculptural landscapes. As my life has progressed, so has what I make and how I make it. The desire to make something from nothing has always been a part of me. From my childhood, when being one of 6 kids meant not having a lot of “stuff”, I knew I could go out into the woods and find tiny dishes for my dolls in tops of acorns, make silverware from delicate branches and food from tiny seeds and berries. My education was in Theatre Arts and for 15 years I worked as a prop builder and designer in New York City. Over the course of those years I worked in small theatres, for Broadway shows and network TV, all of which taught me much about building and creating. Reusing wood, particularly that which has been shaped by man and worn by time is important to me, as these are the same qualities I see in the horses I love so much. Older school horses are what I am given to ride, and they are the durable, exquisite, intelligent working machines that inspire me. |
