After 10 years working in the field of Graphic Design, I took time off to paint and exhibit my watercolors. Moving with my husband, from Gainesville, FL to Lawrenceville in 2001, was the perfect time for this, so-called, sabbatical. Over the next three years, I painted and exhibited around the region. I had many opportunities to share my work, which included a two-person show at the Princeton Arts Council and solo shows at places such as Small World Coffee, The Chapin School, ETS, and The Peggy Lewis Library in Lambertville.

After my second child was born in 2005, I took a break from my painting and focused on mothering, but in 2009, The Artist Network was the perfect opportunity to move forward with my art. My Graphic Design background has proven valuable to the Marketing/Communications committee, therefore I've been immersed in the creation and efforts of the LMS Artists Network and I expect that it will lead to more art-making, more learning, and more exploration.

Artist's Statement

My approach to painting, strongly influenced by over 20 years as a designer, begins with a composition. Once the design is determined, it has a structured, graphic feel, but comes alive through color. A lively fluidity of form emerges from the nature of the watercolor medium itself. I am painting the energy of what I see, but the particular combination of color and shape in my paintings are a function of the process as well as the inspiration. This intensity is achieved by the layering and glazing of staining pigments. For a long time, I have been satisfied with the 'tree' as my subject matter. Even though a tree stays rooted in the ground, it is ever-changing in it's color and texture. Everywhere I turn, I am composing.

Recently, I began exploring mixed-media. Currently, I'm working on an on-going series of small, 5" x 5" pieces, starting with an acrylic painting on canvas and working in other materials such as words on paper, photos, fiber and notions. I love to be inspired by the words and poems from the many books and snippets I've collected over the years. Sometimes just a few short phrases become the catalyst for something new. Incorporating them in my art and allowing them to guide me is just so engaging. I guess you could say that the process becomes very 'cerebral.' That is what I enjoy most about this new direction.
