David Morhaimdavid_morhaim@hotmail.com In one form or another, art has always been in my life. My first structured art education was at age 11 (an adult education, night-class in life drawing)...the candle was officially lit. As an Art Major in High school I was a Boston Globe - Gold Key Award winner (1980). I attended Boston University - School of Fine Arts for two years of classical art education (drawing, painting & sculpting from the still-life, figure & landscape). I won a statewide (MA) contest for an art job with a local retail chain, (Bldg. #19) doing in-store murals & cartooning for their ad circular. During that time I continued taking art classes at night (Mass College of Art Continuing Ed). After two years of working, returned to full-time art education at School of Visual Arts in NYC (illustration major). Had two shows in Nyack NY at Horsefeathers Gallery & the Nyack Public Library; “Clouds” - Abstract watercolors, wherein I invited the viewer to draw with grease pencil on the glass, to define the forms they saw. And “Music” a multi-media, visual interpretation of Pat Metheny’s music. Once out of school, I played the NY “Starving Artist” role to perfection. Caricaturist, Paste-up artist (NY Magazine & Interview) B&W photo printer, Storyboard artist, Muralist, Wedding photographer, Animator, Subway sketcher, Live-music artist (drew & met; The Allman Brothers, Bo Diddley, The Grateful Dead, Larry Carlton, The Who, Peter Frampton, The Radiators, Phil Lesh & Friends, James Taylor, Dr. John, Warren Haynes, The Neville Brothers, Toots and the Maytalls, Malatini & the Mahotella Queens, Alvin Baptiste, Les Paul Trio, Grover Washington Jr., Eric Clapton, Joe Lovano, Paul Motian, Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, Michael Brecker, John Scofield and a host of anonymous subway and street musicians...see my website www.davidmorhaim.com). All of the above experiences helped me to grow as an artist, but I had to eat, so I took a full-time job with an ad agency (Ogilvy) as a paste-up, props and storyboard artist. During this time, I began shooting photography more seriously, continued doing murals in children’s bedrooms and donated graphic design to Songs of Love (a non-profit foundation that writes personalized songs for sick children... songsoflove.org) I’ve also written and illustrated 4 children’s books during my 15 year train commute to NYC, and am working towards getting published (also on my website). 20 years later, laid off from Ogilvy and I’ve decided to give my life-long passion a chance. I’ve been living in Lawrenceville since 2001 with my wife Tam (also an Artist Network member...see Buttonhedz) & son Zach. Thank you for your interest...please help support the arts! |
