Jim BrittonAs a lifelong resident of Central New Jersey, I’ve benefited as an artist from exposure to the tremendously wide variations within the region. Whether environmental, philosophical or cultural, these variations not only influence and inspire my work, but serve to remind me that each piece of art will affect each viewer differently. There is no contract between myself and the viewer; there is only the relationship however brief or lasting between the viewer and the work. Each person will bring their personal perspective to that relationship with the art, and each will take something uniquely their own away from the experience. For this reason I believe interpretive statements or commentary I might offer on my work are ultimately intrusive and unnecessary. I find that this outlook tends to provide greater freedom to explore the many avenues of subject matter and expression. Though primarily a painter, I feel no obligation to work in a specific medium or style of execution. New project ideas may occur to an artist at any time, and in my view it is an artist’s responsibility to always keep his or her eyes, ears and mind open to those moments- responding with the means and methods most suitable in capturing them. I am currently employed as a civil engineer, with a long background in graphics and illustration. Taken together with my intense interest in music, I am forever fascinated by the precise yet fluid connections between the disciplines of visual art, music and mathematics. These interrelationships inform my work and reinforce the commitment made to expand my knowledge and continually reach artistically. Recently I have joined the Lawrenceville Main Street Artists Network as a founding member in an effort to return to my painting roots. I am eager to exhibit my work in this cooperative venue, and look forward to participating in the ongoing emergence of this vital new artistic presence in our region. |
